Subotica/Novi Sad, 16th June – President of the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Bálint Juhász, attended a commemoration in Subotica today marking the 82nd anniversary of the deportation of Jews from the city and, on behalf of the provincial parliament, laid a wreath at the memorial monument in the courtyard of the Subotica Synagogue.
In the spring and summer of 1944, one of the most tragic events in the history of Subotica took place when nearly the entire Jewish community was deported to camps and factories throughout Europe. On the anniversary of the deportations, commemorative ceremonies are traditionally held in Subotica at the synagogue and other sites of remembrance to pay tribute to the victims and preserve the memory of the suffering endured by the Jews of Subotica.
Remarks were delivered by Isaac Asiel, Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Community in Serbia; Robert Sabadoš, President of the Jewish Community of Subotica; and Daniel Đivanović, President of the City Assembly of Subotica. They emphasized that fostering a culture of remembrance was important not only out of respect for the victims but also as a warning, ensuring the crimes of the past were never repeated.
In addition to President Juhász, wreaths were laid by representatives of the Government of Hungary, the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Subotica, the City of Subotica, the National Council of the Hungarian National Minority, the National Council of the Bunjevci National Minority, the Jewish communities of Novi Sad, Subotica, and Zrenjanin, as well as other participants.
